OREANDA-NEWS  For the period from February 24, 2022 to September 2025, the European Union remains Russia's largest gas market, both for pipeline supplies and for liquefied natural gas (LNG). The Guardian writes about this with reference to Crea calculations.

Since then, the EU has bought 35 percent of its pipeline gas from Russia, followed by China (30 percent) and Turkey (29 percent). Over the past month, Hungary has become the leader in purchases (393 million euros), followed by Slovakia (207 million euros).

About half of all Russian LNG exports go to European countries, while China and Japan lag significantly behind, with results of 22 and 18 percent, respectively. According to various sources cited in the article, since the beginning of hostilities in Ukraine, countries have purchased Russian LNG worth 42 billion euros.

Most of the purchases of pipeline gas by the European Union occurred in previous years, when the fuel was still flowing through the gas transportation system of Ukraine. Since 2025, this route has been stopped, and now supplies continue only through one of the branches of the Turkish Stream gas pipeline with a capacity of 15.5 billion cubic meters per year.

Also, starting in 2027, the European Union intends to completely stop purchasing Russian LNG. The relevant regulations are included in the 19th package of sanctions approved last week.
