The EU called for lifting one ban for Russia

OREANDA-NEWS The European Union (EU) needs to suspend the ban on imports of Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG). Such an appeal was made by Claudio Descalzi, CEO of the oil and gas company Eni, speaking to reporters of the newspaper Sole 24 Ore.
The restriction will come into force on January 1, 2027, but the measure must be suspended, Descalzi believes. In his opinion, the issue of gas should be reviewed, since we are talking about supplies worth 20 billion cubic meters of gas from Russia to European countries.
"For all power plants, the flexibility of the energy system is provided by gas; it is not provided by renewable energy sources that cannot be turned off, it is not provided by nuclear energy, which we do not have," said the head of the company.
Speaking to reporters, Descalzi stressed that the EU "cannot be radical and dogmatic," and in an emergency situation it is necessary to show common sense.
In October last year, the Council of the European Union allowed the resumption of gas purchases from Russia in case of supply problems. Brussels clarified the points of the document, outlining the conditions under which the measure may be weakened.
