OREANDA-NEWS In November, Russian oil supplies to India collapsed. This is reported by The Economic Times (ET) with reference to Kpler data.
In a couple of weeks, shipments of raw materials fell by 66 percent year-on-year, to 672 thousand barrels per day. In October, the figure was 1.88 million barrels. Analysts explain the trend by the greater caution shown by customers against the background of US sanctions against Lukoil. The total volume of Russian oil shipments in all directions in November fell by almost a third (minus 28 percent) compared to October, to 2.78 million barrels.
It takes about a month for Russian oil to be delivered to India, and most shipments shipped in November will reach recipients after November 21, when US sanctions take effect. ET explains the actions of Indian companies as "logistical tactics", thanks to which they try to meet deadlines and reduce the volume of orders.
Prior to the inclusion of Russian oil companies in the SDN list of the US Treasury, New Delhi had already faced threats from Washington to increase duties for the purchase of Russian oil. According to Sumit Ritolia, a leading analyst at Kpler, India will not be able to easily replace Russian oil and find another supply channel for two million barrels per day. Abandoning Russian oil could cost New Delhi about $9-11 billion.
Earlier, the FT reported that India continued to buy Russian oil despite threats from US President Donald Trump. According to the Center for Energy and Clean Air Research, India purchased 3.1 billion euros worth of fossil fuels from Russia last month, becoming the second largest buyer after China. Spending on crude oil increased by 11 percent month-on-month to 2.5 billion euros. Two thirds of this amount was spent by private refineries.
