OREANDA-NEWS Serbia has agreed to extend Russian gas supplies until the end of March 2026, President Alexander Vucic said.
"We have an agreement to extend gas supplies for another three months, until March 31, so that people can be safe and sleep in peace," the RTS television channel quoted him as saying.
Belgrade expected to conclude a new long-term gas supply contract in May this year.
Russian natural gas supplies to the region began in 1978. Currently, Gazprom's main partner in Serbia is State Enterprise Serbiyagaz. Starting in 2021, Gazprom began supplying gas to Serbia via a new route - through the Turkish Stream offshore gas pipeline and further through Turkey and Bulgaria.
In 2024, gas consumption in the country amounted to 2.65 billion cubic meters, which was almost entirely provided by Russian supplies.
Energy cooperation with Belgrade is complicated by the situation surrounding Russian investments in the national energy company NIS. As President Vladimir Putin stated on Friday during a "Direct Line", Russia proceeds from the fact that in the situation around NIS, the Serbian authorities will fulfill the obligations assumed by the intergovernmental agreement.
At the beginning of 2025, NIS, being a "subsidiary" of Gazprom Neft, was included in the American SDN List. Vucic stated that the United States demands the complete withdrawal of Russian capital.
