OREANDA-NEWS By the end of May 2025, the proportion of Chinese brands in the Russian new car market has slightly decreased compared to the previous year, but still remains dominant. This was stated by Sergey Tselikov, the head of the Autostat analytical agency, in his Telegram channel.
By the beginning of summer, Chinese brands accounted for more than half (54%) of the Russian new car market. Domestic cars came in second place with a share of 33.1%. This includes not only Lada, but also newly established brands. The Chinese-Belarusian brand Belgee rounded out the top three with a share of 4%.
By the beginning of June, the proportion of Western car manufacturers remained negligible. German and Japanese brands accounted for 2.7% of the Russian new car market each. The share of South Korean brands declined to 1.3%.
Tselikov emphasized that the Solaris brand, which is officially classified as Russian, occupied 2% of the market.
However, he pointed out that these cars are actually assembled at the former Hyundai plant in St. Petersburg.
Following the mass withdrawal of Western manufacturers due to the start of the special military operation in Ukraine, Chinese brands have taken a dominant position in the Russian new car market. By the end of 2023, their share reached 51%, and in 2024 it was in the range of 58-59%.
Analysts anticipate that in the year 2025, Chinese brands will continue to dominate the Russian market, but their share in the new car market will gradually decline. This trend will be influenced by a variety of factors, including a decrease in the profitability of Chinese manufacturers, the accumulation of excess inventory in Russia, and the ongoing rise in recycling rates. Consequently, by the end of this year, according to Nikolai Ivanov, the head of the new car department at Rolf, the total sales of Chinese cars may decrease by 15-17%.
