Interest in Chinese cars in Russia began to decline

OREANDA-NEWS By the end of May, the share of Chinese passenger car brands in sales in the Russian market fell from 55 percent last year to 41 percent, or from 50,000 to 44.8 thousand. This is reported by RIA Novosti with reference to a study by Gazprombank Avtolizing.
Alexander Kornev, head of the Department for work with importers at Gazprombank Autoleasing, sees no opportunities to improve the situation in the Chinese segment in June. Thousands of cars will be sold by only five brands — Haval, Geely, Changan, Jetour and Jaecoo. In May, the first three had sales of 15.8 thousand, 6.8 thousand and 5.2 thousand, respectively.
Last year, Chery's share was still quite large, but now it is increasingly shifting towards the Russian brand Tenet, which assembles cars from Chinese kits.
Earlier, the Autostat agency estimated that sales of Japanese brands in Russia have tripled since the beginning of 2026. In five months, 30.9 thousand new passenger cars were registered.
Meanwhile, JSC "Production of Passenger Cars" (PLA), which owns the rights to the Volga car brand, announced plans to produce about 30 thousand cars by the end of this year and sell 25-27 thousand of them. By now, the manufacturer is ready to produce three models, which are low-localized Geely cars.
