OREANDA-NEWS The Kaliningrad Region will continue to receive goods via the Northern Sea Route, which is cheaper and faster than the southern route through the Suez Canal, Governor Anton Alikhanov said.

In the Kaliningrad region, which has no borders with other subjects of the Russian Federation, after the decision to restrict the transportation of goods through Lithuania by rail and motor transport, problems with overland transit arose. It was decided to deliver cargo to the region from other regions of Russia via an alternative route through the Baltic Sea by ships and ferries. In October, the first vessel via the Northern Sea Route - Newnew Polarbear from Shanghai - arrived in the Kaliningrad region.

"The Northern Sea Route is very interesting for us logistically. If you look at the price, it turns out to be cheaper and faster than the southern route through the Suez Canal. That ship, if counted per container, turned out to be cheaper and faster than the southern route. This is very interesting for us, and the connection with China is also important and interesting for us. I am sure that we will use it," Alikhanov said in an interview with RIA Novosti.
