OREANDA-NEWS  In the first half of 2023, the Russians brought more than 130 thousand used foreign cars from Japan and Korea through the customs of the Far East. This is almost twice as much as last year, with reference to a customs representative, the Vedomosti newspaper reports. The record was set in June — 28 thousand cars were cleared for the month compared to 15 thousand a year earlier.

According to a customs source, the growth in demand for used cars imported from abroad is associated with sanctions against Russia, the departure of international brands and a shortage of new cars in the country. The dynamics that developed in 2022 have been maintained to this day.

As stated in the transport company Fesco, operating on the territory of the Vladivostok commercial sea port, the number of new cars in the volume of transport imported into Russia has significantly decreased. Instead, used cars from Japan are more often brought to the country. According to the agency "Autostat", in January–May 2023, 171.5 thousand new passenger cars and 178.5 thousand cars with mileage were imported into Russia. Half of the used cars imported into the country in May were foreign cars from Japan.

The demand for used cars is growing, as parallel imports cannot fully meet the demand for foreign cars, said the representative of the automotive portal "Drom". Therefore, Russians buy so-called "almost new" cars from Korea and Japan, which had no mileage in the country. Their deliveries are not limited by sanctions, as many imported cars are cheaper than 6 million yen (3.66 million rubles).

Vladimir Zhelobov, Director of the department for the redemption of Avtodom Group and Avtospeccenter Group, urged Russians to prepare for a 15-20 percent rise in the price of new cars. He explained this by the depreciation of the ruble: according to the expert, dealers are running out of foreign cars, and the next shipments will be made at the new exchange rate of the Russian currency, which is at a minimum.

The association "Russian Car Dealers" said that there would be no sharp jump in car prices. According to experts, the cost will increase gradually, while the rise in price will affect not only new cars, but also used vehicles.
