OREANDA-NEWS. RIA Novosti news agency reported that on October 21, the world’s most powerful nuclear icebreaker Arktika of the project 22220 officially became a part of the Russian fleet.

It is noted that the flag of the Russian Federation on the nuclear-powered ship was raised in the presence of the country’s Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin. The acceptance certificate was signed by the general directors of Atomflot, Mustafa Kashka, and the Baltic Shipyard, Aleksey Kadilov.

Nuclear icebreakers of project 22220 are the largest and most powerful in the world. Media note that they are necessary to ensure the primacy of Russia in the Arctic, these vessels will be able to lead convoys of ships, breaking through ice up to 3 meters thick. Arctika can be used both in the Arctic Ocean and in the mouths of polar rivers. Icebreakers will provide transporting of ships with hydrocarbons from the fields of the Yamal and Gyda peninsulas and from the shelf of the Kara Sea to the countries of the Asia–Pacific region.
