OREANDA-NEWS Former French Prime Minister Lionel Jospin has passed away at the age of 88. This is reported by the BFMTV channel.
"Lionel Jospin, a politician and prominent figure of the Socialist Party, died on Sunday, March 22, at the age of 88," the statement said.
Jospin served as head of the French government from 1997 to 2002 during the presidency of Jacques Chirac. The politician twice ran for president of the country from the French Socialist Party — in 1995 and 2002.
Earlier, Marine Le Pen's right-wing National Unification party put forward a vote of no confidence in the French government. The reason was the new energy strategy, which was adopted by the country's authorities without parliamentary approval.
