OREANDA-NEWS  Italy plans to finally abandon Russian gas by the end of 2023. This was stated in an interview with Il Messaggero by Industry Minister Adolfo Urso.

"During this year we will refuse to supply gas from Russia, and in the future we will be able to supply gas to other countries ourselves and turn into a gas hub," Urso said.

According to him, two complexes that are being built in Piombino and Ravenna will be put into operation by the summer. They will produce 10 billion cubic meters of gas, which Italy just bought from Russia in 2022. At the same time, in 2021, the country purchased up to 40% of fuel from the total consumption from the Russian Federation, and in 2022 this figure decreased to 16%.

The publication added that in Italy over the past few months, they have constantly stated that the main goal is to find alternative gas suppliers in order to stop buying resources from Russia.

On February 9, Russian Ambassador to Italy and San Marino Sergey Razov said that the supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the United States to Italy turned out to be four to five times more expensive than the cost of supplies from Russia. According to him, gas supplies from Russia have been at a stable and high level for decades.

Before that, the Kommersant newspaper wrote that Italy had decided to expand gas supply agreements with North African countries, in particular with Libya, in order to replace fuel from Russia.
