OREANDA-NEWS Russia is preparing retaliatory measures against Norwegian fishermen, which may be introduced as early as 2025. The work was announced by the head of Rosrybolovstvo Ilya Shestakov, quoted by TASS.
In July 2025, Norway banned fishing in its exclusive economic zone for two companies from the Russian Federation. According to Rosrybolovstvo, this is a gross violation of existing agreements on joint management of aquatic biological resources.
On the sidelines of the International Fisheries Forum and the Exhibition of the Fishing Industry, Seafood and Technology, the head of the department noted that the situation has not yet affected fish stocks, but the measures taken by Norway will have consequences starting in 2026.
"We are currently preparing retaliatory measures, which we will announce to the Norwegian side in a timely manner. While our further negotiations are on hold, the dates for the next consultations have not been determined, including the holding of a joint fisheries commission, which we need to hold in order to distribute the volume for next year," he explained.
Earlier, Shestakov noted that the parties faithfully fulfilled their obligations even during the Cold War, we are talking about both access of vessels to fishing areas and the exchange of scientific data. Therefore, in response to restrictions from Norway, Russia may refuse to comply with the agreed quotas for fishing in the open waters of the Barents and Norwegian Seas. He also accused Oslo of trying to destroy an effective system of management and regulation of fishing in the North Atlantic, which has been built for many decades.
