OREANDA-NEWS  It is planned to reduce the staff of the US National Intelligence Service by 40% in accordance with the instructions of the director of the department Tulsi Gabbard, CBS News reported, citing his office.

In a newsletter from the Office of National Intelligence (ODNI), Gabbard stated that it "has become a bloated and inefficient structure, and abuse of power is rife in the intelligence community."

The acronym includes the National Center for Combating Proliferation and Biosafety, which monitors weapons of mass destruction; the Center for Malicious Foreign Influence, which describes its mission as "mitigating threats to democracy"; the Cyber Threat Information Integration Center, which deals with cybersecurity, and a number of others.

The cuts are expected to save about $700 million annually.

The TV channel recalls that Gabbard was confirmed as the leader of ODNI in February of this year. Since then, she has opposed the politicization of intelligence, provoking resistance from Democrats.

The publication says Gabbard "ignited political battles over Russia's interference in the 2016 election" by publishing documents that cast doubt on the government's conclusions that Moscow was trying to boost President Donald Trump's election campaign.

"Last month, she declassified documents dating back to 2016 and accused administration officials of then-President Barack Obama of participating in a 'coup d'etat' against Trump," CBS News notes.
