OREANDA-NEWS France, China and Russia are blocking a UN Security Council resolution that would allow the use of force to open the Strait of Hormuz, The New York Times (NYT) reports, citing a diplomat and a senior UN official.
"Russia, China and France have effectively thwarted an attempt by Arab countries to obtain permission from the UN Security Council for military action against Iran in order to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, stating that they oppose any language authorizing the use of force," the article says.
It is specified that we are talking about a project prepared by Bahrain with the support of the Persian Gulf countries. A vote on it is expected on Friday, but the participation of key countries remains in doubt.
As the newspaper notes, disagreements arose not only among the permanent members with the right of veto, but also among the non-permanent members of the Security Council. The draft document has already been revised several times and is now in its fourth edition.
Earlier it became known that Iran has revised its priorities in the conflict with the United States. It is noted that Tehran has focused on controlling the Strait of Hormuz instead of developing a nuclear program.
