OREANDA-NEWS  A significant accumulation of mucus caused bronchospasm and two attacks of acute respiratory failure in Pope Francis, who is being treated at the clinic, the Holy See's Press Room reported on Monday.

"Pope Francis underwent two bronchoscopies to get rid of copious discharge. In the afternoon, he was given noninvasive mechanical ventilation," the Vatican press service said.

It is reported that the pontiff remained conscious all the time, but doctors did not announce a further prognosis.

In January, the pontiff contracted bronchitis. On February 14, he was admitted to the Agostino Gemelli Clinic in Rome, as the disease had acquired a chronic form. After X-rays and laboratory tests, he was also diagnosed with bilateral pneumonia.

Pope Francis is 88 years old.
