OREANDA-NEWS  Finland does not need nuclear weapons in peacetime. This was stated by the country's president, Alexander Stubb, according to Yle.

"Finland doesn't need nuclear weapons in peacetime," he said.

According to the Finnish leader, no one has suggested that Finland deploy nuclear weapons on its territory, and the republic is not going to become a nuclear power.

Nevertheless, Stubb stressed that Finland, as a NATO member, should not have any restrictions in this area. He also clarified that Russia does not pose an immediate military threat to the country.

Earlier, Russia's permanent representative to the OSCE, Dmitry Polyansky, said that Finland's intention to allow the import and storage of nuclear weapons would make this country a potential target for a retaliatory strike. He noted that Finland's change in legislation to lift the ban on nuclear weapons near Russia's borders is a provocative step.
