OREANDA-NEWS  The world's largest iceberg A23a has run aground off the island of South Georgia in the Atlantic Ocean. This is reported on the website of the British Antarctic Survey (BAS).

It is noted that the ice block weighs almost a trillion tons and has twice the surface area of London. The iceberg broke off from the Filchner Glacier shelf in western Antarctica in 1986 and remained in place in the Weddell Sea for more than 30 years. In 2020, the currents carried him towards South Georgia.

According to BAS oceanographer Andrew Myers, the iceberg is currently stranded. He noted that it may break due to increased loads, but this is almost impossible to predict.

In February, it was reported that a large chunk had broken off from the world's largest iceberg, A 23a. Polina Soloshchuk, chief specialist of ice and Hydrometeorological Information at AIA, noted that since November 2023, during the period of drift in clear water, the iceberg area has decreased by almost 11 percent.
