OREANDA-NEWS. March 11, 2009. Some 1760 graduates will leave Belarusian medical schools in 2009. It is 45% of Belarus’ demand for medical personnel, Health Minister of Belarus Vasily Zharko told reporters in Gomel on March 10. The Minister took part in students’ assignment ceremony held in the Gomel Medical University.

In 2009, around 293 graduates of the Gomel Medical University will start to work at medical establishments of the Mogilev and Gomel oblasts. Young surgeons, obstetricians, therapists and pediatrists will start their carrier there. Vasily Zharko also noted that Belarus has started to develop high technologies in medicine actively. So, the country is in need of emergency physicians, cardiologists, surgeons and cardiac surgeons.

According to Viktor Umants, pro-rector of the Gomel Medical University, annually around 300 graduates of the university are sent to work at medical establishments of the Mogilev and Gomel oblasts. In the near 5-6 years, their number is expected to be doubled.

The Gomel Medical University was founded in 1990 to provide the Gomel and Mogilev oblasts of Belarus with medical personnel. At present, around 3,000 students attend the university. The Gomel Medical University established relations with many leading medical schools abroad including Nagasaki University (Japan), the Institute of Pediatrics of the Krakow University (Poland), the Ragama military-rehabilitation centre (Sri Lanka), the medical department of the Aberdeen University (Scotland), three universities in the USA, Russian universities and research centres.
