OREANDA-NEWS  By reducing quotas for rail transit of goods to the Kaliningrad Region for 2025, Lithuania has once again violated the terms of its accession to the European Union in 2004, which provide for the unhindered passage of goods from the main territory of Russia to its western region. This opinion was expressed to TASS by Senator from the Kaliningrad region Alexander Shenderyuk-Zhidkov.

The press service of the regional government told TASS on Tuesday that for 2025 Lithuania has reduced the quota for transit of goods by rail to the Kaliningrad region by about 30% compared to 2024.

"Over the past three years, we have become accustomed to the fact that the Lithuanian authorities have developed some formulas on the basis of which they consider it possible to restrict the transit of goods through their territory to and from the Kaliningrad region, explaining this with some mathematical formulas. This is completely unacceptable and, in my opinion, it completely violates the rules set out in the joint communique of Russia and the EU, when Russia agreed to Lithuania's accession to the European Union," the senator said.

Lithuania's actions not only contradict logic, but also contradict the agreements between Russia and the EU, the senator noted. "Lithuania is obliged to ensure the free transit of goods to and from Kaliningrad. All the new rules that she comes up with from certain sanctions restrictions only harm her, first of all," the agency's interlocutor added.
