OREANDA-NEWS The Moscow Meshchansky Court sentenced Andrei Esipov, general director of the Picket Group of Companies, to nine years in a penal colony, accused of embezzling 2.4 billion rubles in the supply of bulletproof vests to the Ministry of Defense, the Prosecutor General's Office of the Russian Federation reported on Tuesday.

"The court sentenced him to 9 years in prison to serve his sentence in a correctional colony with the deprivation of the right for 4 years to engage in activities related to the performance of managerial functions in commercial organizations," the supervisory authority said.

The businessman was also fined 800 thousand rubles.

"A pre-trial cooperation agreement has been concluded with Esipov, the terms of which he has complied with," the Prosecutor General's Office said.

Esipov was found guilty of committing crimes under Part 4 of Article 159 (fraud committed by a person using his official position, an organized group, on an especially large scale) and paragraphs "a", "b" of Part 4 of Article 174.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (legalization (laundering) of funds or other property acquired by a person as a result of his commission of a crime).

"The court found that Andrei Esipov, holding the position of general director of GK Piket LLC, misled officials of the Russian Ministry of Defense when supplying 30 thousand bulletproof vests at an inflated cost that did not meet the conditions and requirements of the state contract concluded with the military department," the department said.

In the period from November 2022 to July 2023, he and his subordinates stole 2.4 billion rubles of budget funds, of which 1.9 billion rubles were subsequently legalized, the prosecutor's office noted.

"The civil claim in the amount of 2.4 million rubles has been satisfied. 104.2 and 104.3 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, the court decided to confiscate and convert the seized property into state revenue for an amount equivalent to the amount of legalized funds," they added.
