OREANDA-NEWS  The national debt of the United States continues to show steady growth, reaching a new historical maximum. According to the US Treasury Department, as of October 19, the volume of government loans amounted to 40.396 trillion dollars, RIA Novosti reports.

Thus, in the two months since breaking the $40 trillion mark on August 19, debt has increased by almost $400 billion, or one percent. In early October, about a quarter of a trillion dollars had already been added to the total amount.

Experts warn of continued negative dynamics in the long term. Analysts predict that by 2030, the US national debt may exceed the 50 trillion mark. In addition, the Congressional Budget Office expects government borrowing to exceed the country's gross domestic product (GDP) by 20 percent by 2036.

Earlier, the head of the US Treasury, Scott Bessent, promised to present a plan to reduce the record national debt after the November elections to the US Congress.
