A fire in a bar in Switzerland claimed the lives of about 40 people

OREANDA-NEWS A fire that occurred during New Year's Eve celebrations in a bar in a ski resort in the Swiss canton of Valais has killed about 40 people, the Italian Foreign Ministry said on Thursday, citing Swiss police.
"Information provided by the cantonal police indicates that about 40 people were killed and about 100 injured," the Italian Foreign Ministry said in a communique.
It states that, according to investigators, the fire was the result of an accident.
Earlier, Swiss media reported deaths due to the fire. Some publications suggested that there were several dozen dead.
European media outlets note that not only Swiss citizens were in the bar, hence the close interest in the tragedy from the authorities of other countries, including Italy.
