OREANDA-NEWS The world's largest glacier has reached the size of Moscow. This is reported by the press service of the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute (AARI).
As noted, the iceberg named A23a came off the shoal and began to drift again in the Southern Ocean. At the moment, it is located 74 kilometers from the uninhabited island of Annenkova. During the three months it stood motionless off the island of South Georgia, it lost 7 percent of its area, shrinking to 2,730 square kilometers. This figure is comparable to the area of the Russian capital, the scientists add.
The iceberg broke off from the outer edge of the Filchner Ice shelf in 1986 and remained in place in the Weddell Sea for more than 30 years. In 2020, the currents carried him towards South Georgia. At that time, its area was
4.17 thousand square kilometers. To date, the initial dimensions of the iceberg have decreased by 35 percent.
Earlier, a massive piece of glacier broke off in the Alps and almost completely destroyed the Swiss village of Blatten. Due to the early evacuation of the underlying settlements, large-scale human casualties were avoided. The flow of the local Lonza River was blocked by fragments of a glacier. It can take up to six years to sort through the rubble.
