OREANDA-NEWS Finland assumed obligations and signed a treaty of perpetual neutrality, but at the same time joined the North Atlantic Alliance. Thus, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov reminded Finnish President Alexander Stubb of the history of his own country, TASS reports.
"In 1944, Finland, which was on the side of Nazi Germany, signed agreements with the USSR. President Stubb recently quoted this. I know him well, he was the foreign minister. They signed an agreement on eternal neutrality, stating that neither side – neither the USSR nor Finland – would ever join structures directed against the other side. Where is all this?" the diplomat wondered.
Lavrov pointed out that the Finnish side has joined NATO, which Moscow "considers its enemy." He also stressed that territorial changes are often an "integral component" of reaching agreements on conflict resolution.
Earlier, Stubb compared the Ukrainian conflict with the Soviet-Finnish war and stated that these situations are similar. According to him, he did not mean that Ukraine would have to become neutral and make territorial concessions, as Finland did in 1944.
