OREANDA-NEWS. On June 26, the US House of Representatives will decide whether to make Columbia District a 51st state.

The American capital Washington has the status of the federal district. This does not give the city residents the right to elect their representatives to the Congress. According to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, such a status is unfair. “Tomorrow we will right this grave injustice which is an affront to our democracy,” she said.

Political analysts believe that the House of Representatives, where the majority is Democrats’, will approve the bill, but the Senate, controlled mostly by the Republicans, will reject it.

The White House said that in any case, the bill will be vetoed by President Donald Trump. He previously noted that the District of Columbia is too small to be a state.
