Putin signed a law banning signage in foreign languages

OREANDA-NEWS Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a law on the protection of the Russian language, which bans signage in foreign languages, among other things. This is reported by TASS.
Now, information on the signs of shops and establishments providing various services that is not advertising must be presented in Russian. Inscriptions in the official languages of the republics and other languages of the peoples of Russia are allowed, but the information on them must repeat the information in Russian. Foreign inscriptions are also allowed only on condition that the Russian version is located nearby. Not only the meaning should match, but also the color of the labels, their size and font.
In addition, it will be possible to use only Cyrillic letters in the names of capital construction facilities that developers plan to use in advertising. The rules will not apply to facilities put into operation before the date of entry into force of this law.
The changes will take effect on March 1, 2026.
Earlier, State Duma deputies proposed renaming settlements with ambiguous names. Slut, Vagina, Sucker, Antilokhovo, Buttocks, Pukovo, Bukhalovo and Konchenburg were under threat.
