Rosselkhoznadzor has banned the import and transit of sheep and goats from Bulgaria and Romania

OREANDA-NEWS The Rosselkhoznadzor has banned the import and transit of sheep and goats from Bulgaria and Romania since August 5 due to outbreaks of smallpox in these countries.
According to the service, in addition to live animals, the restriction applies to other animals susceptible to this disease and goods controlled by the state veterinary supervision. Controlled shipments include finished products from mutton and goat meat, milk and dairy products, animal feed and other raw materials and products obtained from the slaughter of sheep and goats, as well as used equipment for their maintenance, slaughter and processing.
According to the World Organization for Animal Health, cited by the Rosselkhoznadzor, 11 foci of sheep and goat smallpox have been confirmed in Bulgaria since July 20, 2025, and 7 in Romania since July 17, 2025.
The Rosselkhoznadzor has not received information about the measures taken by the veterinary services of these countries to prevent the spread and elimination of the disease.
Supplies of livestock products from Bulgaria and Romania are also limited by the Russian food embargo, which has been in effect since August 2014. It applies to a number of countries, including the European Union.
