OREANDA-NEWS   Russia surpassed France in terms of grain supplies to Morocco and came out on top this fall, Ruslan Khasanov, director of the Federal State Budgetary Institution "Federal Center for Safety and Quality Assessment of Agro-Industrial Complex Products" (CPC AIC), told RIA Novosti.

"In recent months, the trend towards changing leaders in grain supplies to Morocco has become more and more obvious. If in June-August of this year the country imported about 1.5 million tons of wheat, of which the bulk was wheat of French origin, then in September Russian wheat came out on top," Khasanov said.

He clarified that in September France was not on the list of wheat suppliers to the kingdom. In addition, Argentina also did not supply wheat to Morocco in September, and the kingdom's wheat imports from Canada decreased by 22%.

"If you look at the agricultural year, Morocco currently occupies the 8th place in the ranking of importing countries of Russian wheat (780 thousand tons). The active growth rates of exports of Russian products indicate the prospects of the Moroccan market for our suppliers," explained the director of the center.

North Africa, whose population has grown from 69 million in 2000 to 97 million this year, needs more and more wheat. At the same time, Morocco, which accounts for the majority of wheat grown in the region, has been suffering from drought for the third year in a row.
