Russia stands for UN reform, Lavrov said

OREANDA-NEWS Russia supports the reform of the United Nations and increasing the role and weight of the countries of the Global South and East in its bodies, in particular, in the Security Council, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said in a video message to participants of the solemn meeting dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the world organization.
"It has long been obvious that the world organization, founded 80 years ago in radically different geopolitical conditions, no longer fully reflects the international balance of power and requires reform. Russia supports an approach that involves increasing the role and weight of the countries of the Global South and East in the UN bodies, including the most important of them, the Security Council," Lavrov said.
When considering the modernization of the organization, it is important not to forget about the personnel situation in its secretariat, where the countries of the "collective West" are strongly overrepresented, he noted.
