OREANDA-NEWS In the week from March 31 to April 6, 2025, traffic in clothing and shoe stores in Russia fell by five percent year—on-year and by 10 percent week-on-week. The newspaper Vedomosti reports that Russians have become less likely to go to the shops, citing a study by Focus Technologies.
The reasons for the drop in the number of visitors to shopping malls are the sharp deterioration of weather conditions. This reduced the desire of potential consumers to update their wardrobe and forced them to postpone purchases, explained Mikhail Vasiliev, head of research and consulting at Focus Technologies.
According to analysts, from March 11 to April 8, traffic increased by a percentage year on year. Due to the abnormally warm weather in March, seasonal peaks (concentration of potential consumers) they shifted to an earlier period, Vasiliev added.
Ilya Yaroshenko, president of the Baon retailer, notes that customers have accumulated pent-up demand, and many did not have time to buy clothes and shoes for spring and summer before the onset of cold weather. However, the decrease in traffic is still influenced by the flow of visitors to marketplaces.
According to the Renaissance Insurance survey, 40 percent of Russian residents began saving a specific amount for shopping. 74 percent of Russians between the ages of 46 and 50 allocate the purchase amounts in advance. At the same time, 67 percent of citizens aged 18 to 25 do not monitor their spending. As for the amount of monthly shopping expenses, 32 percent of the population spend from 10 to 20 thousand rubles for these purposes. In addition, 46 percent of the expenses amount to more than 50 thousand.
