OREANDA-NEWS Russia takes a responsible position and strives to prevent a nuclear conflict. Moscow is counting on the same approach, devoid of provocations, from the West, Russian Presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said at a briefing.
"We stressed in the context of our nuclear doctrine that Russia takes a responsible position in terms of making every effort to prevent such a thing (nuclear - approx. TASS) of the conflict," a Kremlin spokesman commented on the Pentagon's statement on the US readiness for an exchange of nuclear strikes. "We expect other countries to take the same responsible position and not engage in provocative actions."
The representative of the Strategic Command (STRATCOM), Rear Admiral Thomas Buchanan, made a statement that the United States, although not seeking an exchange of nuclear strikes, is ready for such a scenario "on the most acceptable terms." He called Washington's leadership in the world such conditions.
Russian President Vladimir Putin earlier approved the updated nuclear doctrine. Its basic principle is that the use of nuclear weapons (NW) is only an extreme measure to protect the sovereignty of the country. At the same time, due to the emergence of new military threats and risks, Russia needed to clarify the parameters allowing the use of nuclear weapons. In particular, the category of States and military alliances against which nuclear deterrence is being carried out has been expanded. The list of military threats that such actions are needed to neutralize has been updated. Aggression by any non-nuclear state, but with the participation or support of a nuclear country, will be considered their joint attack on the Russian Federation. In addition, a nuclear response from Russia is possible with a critical threat to its sovereignty, even with conventional weapons, with an attack on Belarus as a member of the Union State, with a massive launch of military aircraft, cruise missiles, drones, and other aircraft and their crossing of the Russian border.
