OREANDA-NEWS  The share of Russians with incomes below the poverty line has decreased. This is reported by the press service of Rosstat.

In the first quarter of 2025, according to the ministry, the poverty line was 16,621 rubles. At the same time, the share of citizens with incomes below this limit decreased by 1.5 percentage points compared to the first quarter of 2024. The poverty rate in Russia dropped to 8.1 percent.

The reduction in poverty is caused by an increase in the income of the population due to an increase in salaries, income from business activities and income from property. The trend was also influenced by an increase in the amount of social benefits. The main sources of income for citizens are wages and social benefits (64 and 16 percent, respectively).

The volume of social security payments to the population in the first quarter of 2025 increased by 12.5 percent year-on-year and amounted to 4.3 trillion rubles. The average monthly nominal accrued salary increased by 13.8 percent to 92,305 rubles. The average pension amount increased by 11.6 percent, to 23,214 rubles.

Earlier it became known that the World Bank has changed the criteria of extreme poverty. The international poverty line has risen to three dollars per person per day instead of the previous 2.15 dollars. The World Bank noted that, based on the revised estimate, about 838 million people lived in extreme poverty in 2022. This is 125 million more people compared to the previous figure of 713 million.
