IMAX, Yi making 360-degree VR cameras for Google Jump
OREANDA-NEWS. May 20, 2016. GoPro was the first camera to hop onboard Jump, Google's design for an array of cameras that provide 360-degree virtual-reality video. But it won't be the last.
Two new partners were announced Thursday during a VR keynote at Google's I/O developer conference in Mountain View, California: Yi (a division of Xiaomi) and IMAX.
Yi is making a 4K camera that's "Jump ready" coming later this year. Based on what was briefly described, it sounds like the Yi camera will be set in the Jump array in a similar way to how GoPro cameras are.
"Google's cooperation with YI, and the forthcoming Jump capable, 3D 360-degree camera is part of Google's ongoing commitment to virtual reality capture and experiences," said Yi in a press release. No release date or price is available yet, but there's a preview page.
IMAX is also working on a professional-grade camera, but no more information was provided.
Clay Bavor, head of VR at Google, hinted at increasing demand from Hollywood to get professional-grade VR-ready cameras in a market, which already has a few options from companies like Jaunt and Nokia.
The GoPro Odyssey camera is already being used by Paramount, The New York Times and Discovery.
