OREANDA-NEWS A bas-relief depicting Joseph Stalin was returned to the Moscow Metro. This is reported by the press service of the carrier.
The commemorative bas-relief "Gratitude of the people to the leader-commander" was recreated in the transition from the Taganskaya station of the Ring Line to the radial line of the same name. The reconstruction took place as part of the celebration of the 90th anniversary of the Moscow metro. The sculpture is dedicated to the victory in the Great Patriotic War and depicts the Generalissimo on Red Square surrounded by workers and children. The composition by Evgenia Blinova and Pavel Balandin in its original form was located on Taganskaya Street until 1965. Then it was replaced by a panel with Vladimir Lenin, and even later it was lost during the construction of an interchange between the lines.
The Yabloko party opposed the reconstruction of the monument. Instead of perpetuating the image of a "tyrant and dictator," the deputies called on the Moscow Department of Transport to help preserve the memory of the victims of repression. "The return of symbols of Stalinism to Moscow is a spit in the face of history, it is an act of mockery of the descendants of the repressed, it is a disgrace to Moscow," the party said in a statement.
