OREANDA-NEWS. On July 13, 2007 the greater part of meeting between the President of the Republic of Latvia, Dr. Valdis Zatlers, and the President of the Republic of Estonia, Toomas Hendrik Ilves, was devoted to energy policy, reported the Presidential website www.president.lv.

Following the meeting, both heads of state pointed out that the major Latvian and Estonian energy companies, Latvenergo and Eesti Energia, should examine alternative energy supplies if there are problems with the construction of a new nuclear power plant in Lithuania.

The two Presidents also discussed the Schengen Agreement, concluding that dismantling border crossings in the near future will require closer cooperation between the law enforcement authorities in both countries.

Another major focus at the meeting was cyber-terrorism and computer crime. President Ilves invited Latvia to participate in an initiative to develop a European centre to counter cyber-terrorism.

President Zatlers also met with the Prime Minister of Estonia, Andrus Ansip. The agenda of their meeting was also dominated by the question of energy independence for the Baltic states. Latvia’s President and Estonia’s Prime Minister also discussed economic cooperation with regard to investments, as well as relations with the Russian Federation.
