OREANDA-NEWS. November 03, 2009. The head of the Representative Office in the Republic of Belarus Arturas Gaidauskas stayed in Minsk. The goal of this business trip was to execute the procedures on closing of the Representative Office, reported the press-centre of Klaipeda Port.

Klaipeda State Seaport Authority following the resolution 10-08-2009 of the meeting of Klaipeda State Seaport Authority Board by the 31st of December, 2009 will withdraw the position of the Head of the Representative Office of Klaipeda Port of the Republic of Belarus established in 2003.

Belarus is one of the most important partners of transport companies of Lithuania. Transport policy of this country is of great importance to Klaipeda Port as Belarusian cargo constitutes the largest part of transit cargo – over 20 percent of total annual cargo handling volumes. Nevertheless, transport policy of Belarus makes the large impact on AB “Lithuanian Railways” (“Lietuvos gelezinkeliai”). This company transits Belarusian cargo in line with cargo from other countries transported via the territory of Belarus to Klaipeda and Kaliningrad Ports. In 2008 the company „Lithuanian Railways“ delivered to Klaipeda Port 6,6 million tons and to Kaliningrad Port even 18 million tons of cargo.

Due to above mentioned reasons Port Authority submitted the proposal to the Ministry of Transport and Communications of the Republic of Lithuania to evaluate and consider with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Lithuania the possibility to establish the position of transport attache to the Embassy of the Republic of Lithuania in the Republic of Belarus. The spheres of activity of the mentioned official should cover the issues on supervision of cargo transportation and logistics in Belarus and execution of the functions related with representation of the interests (for example, spreading of information about the possibilities of Lithuanian transport system, execution of promotional projects, collection of information on transport policy of Belarus) of diverse transport companies (including Klaipeda Port)

The above mentioned representation of the interests of Lithuanian transport system should bring important political and economical benefit to our state while cooperating with one of the most important partners – the Republic of Belarus.
