OREANDA-NEWS. April 06, 2011. The western Estonian island Vormsi will in the next couple of years transform into an energy independent island, a rare undertaking that founders hope will produce ideas worth exporting to countries across the globe.

Costing up to 10 million euros, the project "Smart Vormsi" aims to create a more efficient living environment for the island's 350 residents. During the three to five year project, Vormsi will start producing wind, solar and biodegradable energy. Alongside green energy solutions, project leaders will develop complimenting IT services.

"It is easy to achieve this on an island, since it's a closed environment which gives us the opportunity to closely monitor its energy consumption levels," Urmas Pau, elder of Vormsi told.
