OREANDA-NEWS. April 11, 2011. "One of the most pressing issues on the daily agenda, one that requires constant work and attention, is ensuring anti-terrorist security. During 2011-2013, as part of the Transport Security project, the Company will be investing 1.9 billion roubles in security equipment and systems to be installed at facilities used by the public," said the President of Russian Railways Vladimir Yakunin during a conference call, reported the press-centre of Russian Railways.

Currently, the Directorate of Railway Stations, a branch of Russian Railways, is implementing a comprehensive programme to ensure public safety and security on transport. The programme provides for equipping stations with stationary metal detectors and inspection and other specialised equipment.

Vladimir Yakunin stressed that it was also necessary to improve legislation to restrict access to transport infrastructure and the surrounding areas. Security also had to be tightened on high-speed rail services.

"In addition, the Company would like to see heavier administrative penalties for violations of rules of conduct on railway transport," said Yakunin.
