OREANDA-NEWS. October 20, 2011. Vladimir Yakunin, the President of Russian Railways, took part in the opening of the III International Regional Rail Business Forum "1520 Strategic Partnership: The Baltic Sea Region," which was held in the Latvian capital Riga, reported the press-centre of Russian Railways.

The event brings together representatives from the countries and the railway administrations of the CIS and Baltic region and heads of transport companies and cargo owners.

The Russian Railways delegation was headed by Company President Vladimir Yakunin.

Russian Railways and Latvian Railways enjoy a good business relationship: 60% of all cargo which enters the Latvian railway network arrives directly from Russia or via Russia.

In his address to the Forum, Yakunin said that the development of cooperation on the international transport corridors linking West and East and North and South was a priority for the railways andinternational organisations. At the same time, in his opinion, it was also important that such co-operation between the railways developed simultaneously and in one direction.

Under discussion during the event are the most pressing development issues facing the railway business, including mechanisms to attract investment to the sector, improving the competitiveness of transport, improving the quality of services, offering an inclusive range of services and upgrading railway infrastructure.

The International Business Forum "1520 Strategic Partnership" is a unique communication platform designed to promote the maintenance, establishment and development of business relationships across the 1520mm broad-gauge railway space.

The Forum is organised by the company Business Dialogue. Russian Railways is the general international partner of the event.
