OREANDA-NEWS. October 24, 2011. The volume of cargo transportation in Moldova in January-September 2011 totaled 7,024.1 thousand tones, up 23.4% from the same period last year. The growth was registered as a result of the increase in the cargo transportation by the motor transport by 16.9 percent – to 3,540.2 thousand tones and by the railway – by 31.2% - to 3,369.8 thousand tones.

The largest share in the total volume of freight loaded at the railway stations in this period belonged to crops and floury production – 36.4%, ferrous metals and scrap metal – 24.8%, building materials and cement – 17.5%.

Cargo transportation by the river transport in January-September 2011 increased by 17.6 percent, to 113 thousand tones, while air freight traffic increased by 25.3% and totaled 1.1 thousand tones.
