OREANDA-NEWS. June 02, 2014. The Agency of the Republic of Kazakhstan for Competition Protection organized “Competition in Globalized Economy” International Conference in Astana (the Republic of Kazakhstan) under the framework of the VII Astana Economic Forum.

The Head of OECD Competition Committee, Frederic Jenny moderated the Conference. Attendees included the heads of antimonopoly authorities of foreign countries, members of the International Competition Network, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), the Eurasian Economic Commission, experts in competition law, businessmen. FAS was represented by Deputy Head, Andrey Kashevarov.

The Conference was opened by the Chairman of the Agency of the Republic of Kazakhstan for Competition Protection, Galym Orazbakov, who drew attention to the importance of cooperation between competition authorities under the conditions of globalised economy and intensified economic interaction. To this purpose, Galym Orazbakov put forward an initiative to establish a dialogue on competition on “G-Global” site. He also made a statement that the Treaty on the Eurasian Economic Union signed on 29th May 2014, in Astana, include a special section on competition.

Andrey Kashevarov made a report on the state of competition in the Russian Federation outlining such issues as the areas of modernization of competition law and development of competition policy, FAS initiatives and judicial practice of the antimonopoly authority. Andrey Kashevarov also discussed long-term FAS strategy by 2024 and international cooperation. In conclusion, Deputy Head of FAS answered the questions of the Conference participants.

Wrapping up the Conference, representatives of the antimonopoly authorities from Kazakhstan, Turkey and Russia and the Eurasian Economic Commission signed the protocol of intent to form a platform for dialogue on the issues of competition on “G-Global” site.

According to the Conference participants, the venue was useful for business in terms of understanding the role of the antimonopoly body in economics as well as the need to comply with the antimonopoly law. Its practical importance was shown by support to the initiative of the Chairman of the Agency of the Republic of Kazakhstan for Competition Protection to create a dialogue platform.

Astana Economic Forum takes place annually in May in Astana (the Republic of Kazakhstan) and it gets together over 20000 participants across the globe. Traditionally Forum includes venues on competition policy and law, organized by the Agency of the Republic of Kazakhstan for Competition Protection. These events become an excellent platform for exchanging knowledge and the best practices in order to improve the work of antimonopoly authorities.
