OREANDA-NEWS. September 08, 2014. The investment in the terminal amounted to EUR 2 million. The project was funded by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and Moldova Agroindbank.

The terminal connects the railway infrastructure of Moldova and that of the EU. Thanks to having both narrow and broad gauge lines, cargoes can be transhipped through the terminal to Europe, Moldova and CIS countries. During the opening ceremony the terminal received the first train from Romania loaded with 16 tanks of petrol and diesel fuel at a total weight of 600 tonnes for Petrom Moldova.

The opening ceremony was attended by Moldova’s Vice-premier, Economy Minister Andrian Candu, Transportation and Road Infrastructure Minister Vasile Botnari, Giurgiulesti Port’s top management, President of the MAIB Board Serghei Cebotari, head of the EBRD Office in Moldova Julia Otto, local officials. According to Vasile Botnari, with the terminal opened, the south of Moldova has become a multimodal transportation hub.

The first segment of the railroad with the European gauge lines was opened in Giurgiulesti last year. This year, it has become possible to export and import cargoes by all kinds of transport – water and land ones – directly from the EU. Companies are now granted an opportunity to transport their exports on advantageous terms. Andrian Candu said the construction of the railway terminal with the narrow-and broad gauge lines, which was part of the Giurgiulesti Port Development Strategy, is a very important step which would spur the development of the southern regions of Moldova and the creation of jobs.

This year the approach to the port is going to be rehabilitated, Minister of Transport and Road Infrastructure of Moldova said to Giurgiulesti local authorities. According to him, the Government has allotted MDL 3 million from the Road Fund to have it repaired. Danube Logistics, an affiliate of Danube Logistics Holding BV, is the general investor, operator and provider of multimodal logistic services in Giurgiulesti Port.
