OREANDA-NEWS. National Grid has started work on a 10-week project to install a new gas pipe in Kingsway (residential slip road running parallel to the A18 Kingsway) and Glanville Avenue, in Scunthorpe.

Work started yesterday (29 September) to install the new pipe, a tough, hardwearing plastic pipe that has a lifespan of at least 80 years and will continue to ensure safe and reliable gas supplies to west Scunthorpe for decades to come. To carry out the work safely it will be necessary to install temporary traffic lights in Kingsway while the project is under way.

A short section of Kingsway will also need to be closed for a week. During this period, there will be no access to Kingsway via the junction of Glanville Avenue and Lloyds Avenue. Instead, access to Kingsway will be via a signed diversion route.

The new pipe will replace an existing gas main in Ashby Road. This main is being replaced as a precautionary measure, following an incident in June. The cause of the incident is currently being investigated by the Health and Safety Executive.

National Grid authorising engineer Paul Martin said: “As a precautionary measure we are replacing the existing medium pressure gas main in Ashby Road with a brand new pipe. This pipe will ensure safe and reliable gas supplies to west Scunthorpe for many years to come. We would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused while we are carrying out our work. We will make every effort to minimize disruption and complete the project as soon as we can.”
