OREANDA-NEWS. November 17, 2014. Professor Leszek Balcerowicz of the Warsaw School of Economics gave a lecture in the Independence Hall of Eesti Pank on Euro: problems and solutions. This lecture was dedicated to the economist Ragnar Nurkse and marked the 95th anniversary of Eesti Pank.

Leszek Balcerowicz is Professor of Economics and Head of the Department of International Comparative Studies at the Warsaw School of Economics. He is a former Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister of the Republic of Poland and a former Governor of the National Bank of Poland. He is a member of the Group of Thirty, a member of the Advisory Scientific Committee of the European Systemic Risk Board, and honorary Chairman of Bruegel, the Brussels-based think tank. He has received numerous awards and honours, including the 2014 Milton Friedman Prize for Advancing Liberty and Poland's highest decoration, the Order of the White Eagle, for his contribution to the systemic transformation.

Eesti Pank started the regular lecture series dedicated to Professor Nurkse, a world-renowned Estonian economist, in 2007. The previous lectures have been given by Vice-President of the European Commission Siim Kallas, Governor of Suomen Pankki Erkki Liikanen, Governor of Sveriges Riksbank Stefan Ingves, and former Governor of the German Bundesbank Professor Axel A Weber.

With this series of lectures Eesti Pank aims to provide room for exciting discoveries and new arguments that would contribute to a better understanding of the challenges ahead for the global and Estonian economies.
