OREANDA-NEWS. OMZ-Special Steels, part of OMZ Group, completed production of a unique vessel shell for the next-generation nuclear reactor core for VVER-TOI project.

OMZ-Special Steels has been developing technologies for production of blanks for reactor vessels and other reactor equipment under VVER-TOI project (Atomenergoproekt, a subsidiary of Rosatom, is the General Designer of this project) together with LLC TK OMZ-Izhora, OJSC NPO CNIITMASH, FSUE CRISM Prometey.

Six meter long experimental shell was manufactured from a 420-ton ingot at a 12000 ton-force automated forging unit. After forging the shell underwent initial heat treatment and milling. Main heat treatment and further quality control of metal successfully completed the production cycle of the blanking operation.

Research of technologies involved in production of a lengthened vessel shell for nuclear reactors of the next generation has great importance not only for OMZ-Special Steels, but also for development of nuclear technologies in Russia in general. Usage of a lengthened shell in the reactor core allows making this zone seamless, which significantly increases its reliability and safety.

OMZ-Special Steels, a company based on metallurgical production of Izhorskiye Zavody, is the largest Russian manufacturer of metal blanks made from special steels. OMZ-Special Steels has many years of experience in manufacturing high-quality products for shipbuilding industry.
