OREANDA-NEWS The construction of cargo ships based on a unified platform solution has begun in Russia at the United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC) "Krasnoe Sormovo" plant, the corporation said in a statement.
"On September 28, 2026, the production stage of construction of the KSD1 project dry cargo ship, the first Russian vessel to be built on the basis of the unified platform solution "Platform No. 1" developed by the USC Engineering Unit in cooperation with the corporation's leading design bureaus, was launched at the USC Krasnoe Sormovo plant," the company said.
The first unified platform solution in Russia will allow creating a family of "river-sea" type cargo vessels. Based on it, USC plans to build various commercial types of vessels, including dry cargo ships, container ships and bulk carriers. The difference between the platform approach is the ability to use a common design and technological basis when creating different types of vessels. This makes it possible to extend the serial effect not only to a specific project, but also to a whole family of vessels. The unification between a platform tanker and a dry cargo ship reaches 60%.
The solemn metal cutting ceremony for the lead vessel was attended by Andrey Puchkov, General Director of USC, Egor Polyakov, First Deputy Governor of the Nizhny Novgorod Region, and Sergey Lyashenko, General Director of the USC "Krasnoe Sormovo" plant.
"When developing Platform No. 1, the requirements and feedback from Russian shipping companies were taken into account. Technical solutions were evaluated not only in terms of the cost of construction, but also in terms of the continued operation of the vessel. One of the objectives of the platform approach is to increase the predictability of the cost of ownership throughout the entire lifecycle," the USC added.
The platform is needed to ensure that a particular enterprise does not waste time on restructuring the main production processes. In addition, this will increase the mass production of ships and shorten the time of their construction.
