OREANDA-NEWS From January to February 19, 2025, the total catch of pollock, which is the main fish in Russia, decreased by 10 percent compared to the same period in 2024 and dropped to 437.3 thousand tons. This is reported by Interfax with reference to data from the Association of Pollock Miners (ADM).
The organization explained this trend, first of all, by unfavorable weather conditions in the Sea of Okhotsk, which is considered a key area for the extraction of this fish. As a result, the fishing fleet was forced to "storm" and spend additional time searching for pollock accumulations.
Additional problems for miners, the association added, were created by "ice fields" in the Sea of Okhotsk. However, there is currently a gradual release of ice from the water area, which should improve the situation with pollock fishing in the foreseeable future. During peak periods, the ADM expects an indicator at the level of 9-10 thousand tons. Throughout the Far Eastern basin, the catch of this fish may exceed the 1 million ton mark by mid-April.
In 2024, Russian fishermen were able to set a record for pollock production. In 12 months, they managed to catch a total of almost 2 million tons of this fish. In annual terms, the indicator increased by 2 percent. The achieved result allowed Russia to outpace its main competitor, the United States, by 640 thousand tons.
