OREANDA-NEWS The Nordic Zenith oil tanker was attacked at night near the Caspian Pipeline Consortium (CPC) terminal in the Black Sea, and a fire was extinguished by the crew itself, a CPC representative confirmed to RIA Novosti.

The Nordic Zenith oil tanker, en route to load oil at the CPC terminal off the Black Sea coast of Russia, caught fire after two attacks overnight, and the fire was extinguished by the crew, Bloomberg reported earlier on Friday, citing sources. According to the MarineTraffic ship tracking portal, the Nordic Zenith vessel is flying the flag of Liberia.

"We confirm that the tanker was supposed to arrive at the CPC terminal for loading. But after the double attack, a fire broke out on the tanker and it sent a distress signal. 13 crew members were evacuated on CPC ships, 9 crew members remained on the tanker at their own request," the CPC representative said.

According to him, as a result of the attack, the vessel became unsuitable for loading oil at the CPC terminal.
"The fire was extinguished by the crew," the company added.

The oil pipeline system of the Caspian Pipeline Consortium is the largest route for transporting oil from the Caspian region to world markets and the main route for Kazakhstan, accounting for more than 80% of the country's exports. The 1.5 thousand kilometer pipeline connects the fields of Western Kazakhstan with the Black Sea coast, where oil is shipped to tankers through the CPC marine terminal. The consortium's largest shareholders include Russia (through Transneft), Kazakhstan (through Kazmunaygas), Chevron, Lukoil, ExxonMobil, Rosneft and Shell joint ventures.
