OREANDA-NEWS Poland will extend the NATO fuel pipeline from the border with Germany, said Deputy Minister of National Defense Cesari Tomczyk.
A preliminary agreement on the integration of Polish and NATO pipeline systems is being signed at the Military Education Center in Warsaw on Friday.
"This project involves the construction of a 300–kilometer-long fuel pipeline from the border with Germany to the base of PERN (Polish pipeline operator - ed.) in Bydgoszcz," Tomczyk said.
He noted that the cost of the project will be about 20 billion zlotys (about 5.5 billion dollars). The Deputy minister claims that these funds have already been planned by the NATO headquarters.
Tomchik clarified that we are talking about the extension of the strategic pipeline, which was built in anticipation of the war with the Soviet Union.
"In the 60s and 70s, NATO created a large pipeline system. This was done in case of a clash with the Soviet Union, but in reality – with Russia. On the battlefield, the most important things are equipment, ammunition and fuel," he added.
In recent years, Russia has noted unprecedented NATO activity near its western borders. The alliance is expanding its initiatives and calls it "deterring Russian aggression." Moscow has repeatedly expressed concern about the buildup of alliance forces in Europe. The Russian Foreign Ministry stated that the authorities in Moscow remain open to dialogue with NATO, but on an equal basis, while the West should abandon its policy of militarization of the continent.
