OREANDA-NEWS By the end of 2025, the EU overpaid more than 20 billion euros after abandoning Russian oil, RIA Novosti estimated according to Eurostat.
In December 2022, the EU banned the supply of domestic products by sea, and from February 2023 — and petroleum products. The sanctions caused a shock in the market — prices went up. If in 2021 the European Union bought oil at 57.4 euros per barrel, then in 2025 — at 64.3 euros.
At the same time, the volume of oil purchased by the EU is decreasing: last year it amounted to 3.3 billion barrels against 3.5 billion in 2024 and 3.4 billion in 2021.
The cost of imports, on the contrary, is growing: if before the imposition of sanctions, the Europeans imported oil for 193.8 billion euros, and in a larger volume, then in 2025 - 212.3 billion. As a result, the lost profit amounted to 22.7 billion euros by the end of the year.
In total, the European Union overpaid 259.9 billion in 2022-2024, and 282.6 billion since the beginning of the sanctions.
In December, European Commissioner for Energy Dan Jorgensen said that the EC would make a proposal at the beginning of the year to ban the import of all Russian oil into the EU.
